KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- Rozita Rohaizad, who was a popular singer and actress during the ‘80s era, dreams of returning to acting on the small screen after a 10-year hiatus.

The 67-year-old veteran artiste, whose real name is Siti Roswita Hamid, said if given a choice, one of the roles she would like to portray is that of a woman who has all the wealth in the world but cannot escape the trials of life and faces one problem after another.

"I want to do such a role because I want to show that life is truly challenging because even though you may be rich, it doesn’t guarantee happiness. Everything we have is only lent to us by Allah SWT to test us. So, I personally feel I can weave my own experiences into the role,” she told Bernama.

When asked if she would take on the role of an antagonist, the daughter of the late actress Mariani Ismail said she would not shy away from the challenge even though she has a soft and gentle demeanour.

"I think I can play the (antagonist) role but I may not be as great as my mother and aunt (the late Puan Sri Saloma) because they had extraordinary talent and I only inherited a small portion of that talent," she said, adding she also dreams of playing the role of a singer.

Rozita, who launched her latest single ‘Bila Ku Merindu’ last month, said in the past, she was not focused on acting as she was too engrossed in her singing career.

"In fact, one day my mother called me and said, ‘Aren’t you my child? Why do you only sing and not act? If it’s about singing, that’s Saloma’, she told me in a sarcastic tone. That’s when I understood what my mother was trying to say, so I tried acting but it was mostly to make her happy.

"Now, however, I feel much more drawn to acting… as I get older, I feel more comfortable (with acting). I used to feel shy (in the earlier days) but now I’m ready to take on the challenges offered," said Rozita, who starred in the drama ‘Tanah Kubur’ and police series ‘Gerak Khas’.

Recalling her early days in acting, Rozita, who also starred in the film ‘Serampang Tiga’, said she used to feel awkward as she had little exposure to acting.

The mother of one is currently actively promoting Malaysian cultural arts on the international stage and was recently in Australia helping a group of Malaysian students to stage a cultural performance at Festival at Boyd in Southbank, Melbourne.

“I’ve also received another invitation to a multicultural event in New Zealand and if there is sponsorship, I would love to go there as well," she said.
